Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp: what it costs, and when your business should use it

Meta now sells an AI agent that answers your customers on WhatsApp. How the 2026 pricing works, what it costs per message, and the system you need behind the chat.

In Egypt, a large share of sales starts with a WhatsApp message. Meta knows it, and since July 2026 it sells its own AI agent that can answer those messages for you. Before you switch it on, it helps to know what each reply costs and what the agent can’t do without a proper system behind it.

How WhatsApp Business pricing works now

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta has charged per message since 1 July 2025. According to Meta’s pricing documentation, last updated on 30 September 2026:

  • You pay only for messages your business sends, and only when they are delivered. Messages customers send you are free.
  • The price depends on the message category and on the customer’s country. Egypt has its own rate on Meta’s rate card.
  • There are five categories: marketing, utility, authentication, service, and since 1 July 2026, Meta Business Agent.
  • The first 1,000 service messages each month are free for every business phone number. Service messages are replies sent inside the 24-hour window after a customer writes, whether a person or a third-party AI writes them.
  • When a customer reaches you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply in time, a free entry point window opens for up to 7 days, and marketing, utility, authentication and service messages in it are not charged.

What Meta Business Agent costs

Meta Business Agent replies are priced differently. Meta charges one global rate of per million tokens, and says a typical reply uses 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which comes to about 4 to 5 US cents per message. Simple answers cost less and long ones more. These replies are never free: not in the first 1,000, and not inside the free entry point window from ads.

A quick way to plan: if a typical sales chat needs ten agent replies, budget roughly 40 to 50 cents per conversation, then multiply by your monthly chats. That is the number to weigh against the time it saves your team.

Where an AI agent helps

  • Answering the same questions all day: prices, sizes, delivery areas, opening hours.
  • Replying at night and on Fridays, when nobody is at the desk.
  • Qualifying a lead before a salesperson calls: what they need, their budget and their area.

Where it needs a person

  • Complaints, refunds and anything where tone matters.
  • Large or B2B deals, where the customer expects a named person.
  • Any answer that depends on live data the agent can’t see, such as stock, an order’s status or a custom quote.

The system behind the chat

WhatsApp is where the conversation happens, not where the business should keep its records. When orders, customer details and follow-ups live only in chats, they get lost between phones, staff and shifts. The setup we build for clients connects WhatsApp to a system the company owns:

  1. A CRM that saves every lead with its source, so you know which ad or page brought each chat.
  2. Orders and stock in one place, so the answer to “is it available?” is correct.
  3. Clear handover rules from the agent to a person, with the chat history attached.
  4. Sales sent back to the ad platforms through the Conversions API, so campaigns learn from real buyers rather than from clicks.

The chat tool can change next year. The customer records and the sales history should stay yours either way.

Common questions

Does the WhatsApp Business app on my phone cost money?

The pricing above applies to the WhatsApp Business Platform, the version businesses connect to software and teams. The free WhatsApp Business app on a phone is a separate product.

Should we use Meta’s agent or another AI?

Replies written by a third-party AI count as service messages, so they fall under the free 1,000 a month, although the AI provider charges for its own usage. Meta’s agent is simpler to switch on. Compare both on your real message volume before you decide.
