What is SEO, and how does a business reach the first page of Google?

SEO explained for business owners: how Google ranks pages, the three parts of SEO, the keywords that bring customers, how long it takes and the mistakes that keep sites on page five.

SEO, search engine optimisation, is the work of making your site the answer Google shows when someone searches for what you sell. Ads stop the day you stop paying. Rankings keep bringing visitors for months after the work is done. Here is how it works, in plain words.

How Google decides what to show

Google tries to show the page that best answers the search. It looks at whether the page is about the topic, whether it is useful and trustworthy, whether other sites point to it, and whether it loads well on a phone. Paying for ads doesn’t change these rankings: organic results and ads are separate.

The three parts of SEO

PartWhat it coversTypical work
Technical SEOWhether Google can find, read and load your pagesSpeed, mobile layout, indexing, sitemap, broken links, duplicate pages, structured data
ContentWhether your pages answer what people search forService pages, guides, FAQs, titles and descriptions in Arabic and English
AuthorityWhether other sites and people vouch for youMentions and links from relevant sites, reviews, directory listings

A business with a shop or an office has a fourth part: local SEO, which decides whether you show up in Google Maps. We explain it in how to add your business to Google Maps.

Choosing the keywords that bring customers

Not every popular search brings buyers. "What is a website" brings students. "Website design company in Cairo" brings clients. Start with the searches that show an intent to buy, then add the questions people ask before they buy, which build trust and bring visitors who become leads later.

  • Service searches: what you sell plus where, such as "kitchen design Nasr City".
  • Price searches: "how much does X cost in Egypt".
  • Comparison searches: "X or Y" and "best X for Y".
  • Problem searches: the problem your product solves, in the buyer’s words.

Arabic and English searches are different markets. A bilingual site needs a separate page for each language, written for how people search in it. We cover this in SEO for Arabic and English websites.

How long it takes

Technical fixes show within weeks. Rankings for competitive searches usually move within two to four months, and keep growing after that as content and authority build up. Be careful with anyone who guarantees the first position within a week.

Steps you can take this week

  1. Add your site to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
  2. Check the Pages report to see which pages are indexed, which are not, and why.
  3. Give every page one clear topic, with a title that says what it is and where.
  4. Test your site on a phone with PageSpeed Insights, and fix what slows it down.
  5. Ask happy clients for Google reviews that mention the service and the area.

Mistakes that keep sites on page five

  • One home page trying to rank for every service.
  • Copied or thin content that says nothing new.
  • A slow site built on heavy themes and too many plugins.
  • Different names, addresses and phone numbers across the web.
  • Buying links from networks that sell them to anyone.

Questions about SEO

Is SEO better than ads?

They do different jobs. Ads bring results from the first week while you pay. SEO takes months and then keeps bringing visitors. Most businesses need both, in a balance that shifts toward SEO over time.

Does Google rank content written with AI?

Google rewards helpful content however it is produced, and treats content made mainly to manipulate rankings as spam. Use AI as a helper, and make sure the facts, the examples and the expertise are yours.

What about ChatGPT and AI search?

AI assistants lean on the same signals: clear pages, accurate business details and reviews. We explain it in how to show up in ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers.

Our SEO service starts with a technical audit and a keyword map, then builds the pages and the local presence that bring enquiries.
